Earth Station

An earth station is a ground station that transmits to and receives from a communication satellite through its antenna, RF chain, modem and baseband equipment.

SubsystemFunction
Antenna systemFocuses transmitted and received microwave energy
HPAHigh-power amplifier for the uplink
LNA / LNBLow-noise amplifier / block for the weak downlink
UpconverterIF →\to uplink RF frequency
DownconverterReceived RF →\to IF / baseband
ModemModulation, demodulation, coding, framing
Tracking systemKeeps the antenna pointed at the satellite (if needed)
Monitor and controlSupervises alarms, power and performance

Earth-station subsystems.

Earth station: transmit chain (codec→modem→up-conv→HPA) and receive chain (LNA→down-conv→modem→output) sharing a duplexer, dish, tracking and monitor/control.

Earth station: transmit chain (codec→\tomodem→\toup-conv→\toHPA) and receive chain (LNA→\todown-conv→\tomodem→\tooutput) sharing a duplexer, dish, tracking and monitor/control.

Here η\eta is aperture efficiency, DD the dish diameter and λ\lambda the wavelength; TsT_s is the system noise temperature. A high G/T (receive gain relative to system noise temperature) is the single figure of merit for downlink reception — larger dish and lower-noise front end both raise it.
