Circuit Elements, Resistance and Resistivity

Limitations. Ohm’s law does not hold for non-linear devices (diode, transistor, thermistor), for gas/arc conductors, or whenever the temperature changes appreciably — their VV–II characteristic is not a straight line.

For metallic conductors the resistance rises almost linearly with temperature:

ElementVV–II relationStores/dissipatesEnergy
Resistor RRv=Riv=RiDissipates as heatP=I2RP=I^2R
Inductor LLv=L didtv=L\,\dfrac{di}{dt}Magnetic fieldW=12Li2W=\tfrac12 Li^2
Capacitor CCi=C dvdti=C\,\dfrac{dv}{dt}Electric fieldW=12Cv2W=\tfrac12 Cv^2
